ADRA will be convening five one-day workshops in 2017. These workshops will cover special issues in dispute resolution.
Workshop Topic: Visible and Invisible Elements of Parenting Disputes: The High Conflict Parent and the Psychological Child
This day workshop is composed of two parts and will be presented by Wendy Buchanan, Psychologist and Workplace Mediator, and Emily Kwok, Clinical and Forensic Psychologist, Family Dispute Resolution Practitioner .
Part 1. The Visible Elements of Parenting Disputes: The High Conflict Parent.
High conflict divorce appears to be fueled by the attitudes and tactics used by High Conflict Individuals. Are these parents presenting with a diagnosable Personality Disorder? What could be the underlying beliefs and misunderstandings that supply motivation for their behaviour? We explorethe controversy around the diagnosis of Personality Disorders and examine some of the tactics and attitudes that hinder the dispute resolution process. We then discuss how awareness of personality patterns may assist the mediator avoid being enrolled in negotiation traps. We also explore some technique for self-care following involvement in a high conflict dispute resolution proceess.
Part 2. The Invisible Elements of Parenting Disputes: The Psychological Child.
We apply child developmental research and theories to decision making of parenting arrangements. This includes an examination of how the understanding of children's cognitive, language, social and emotional development can assist with the determination of parenting plans/agreements. Using case studies, participants will also identify children's defense mechanisms during parental disputes, discuss children's understanding of time, separation and loss, as well as investigate children's experinces of reunification.
This workshop will run from 9:15am to 4:45pm on Thursday 26 October 2017, for which 7 CPD points will be granted. Lunch will be provided.
The event will cost $150 for ADRA members and $225 for non-members.
