Outline of Seminar: What is the role of cognition in questions of capacity? How is this relevant to the legal context for example fitness to stand trial examinations, instructing lawyers in proceedings and capacity to partake in mediation? What are some of the neurological and psychological factors which can influence cognition and capacity? How can we work within individuals who have cognitive impairment within the legal setting?

Presenter Biography: Dr Amanda J White is a qualified Forensic Psychologist and Clinical Neuropsychologist with over 10 years experience. She combines clinical and forensic expertise and research skills gained from working in a variety of settings including private practice, public hospitals, correctional facilities and academia. Her PhD investigated the role of cognition in fitness to stand trial assessments. Dr White regularly provides expert reports for a variety of courts and tribunals. She has extensive experience in both criminal and civil matters, and assessing clients with a wide range of conditions including acquired brain injuries, neurodegenerative disorders and mental health conditions. She is the current President of the NSW branch of the Australian and New Zealand Association of Psychiatry, Psychology and Law (ANZAPPL).
