Levels of Membership
ADRA welcomes many types of Members. ADRA Members include the following:
- Practitioner Members – ADRA’s Practitioner Members are dispute resolvers and are eligible to apply for accreditation under the National Mediation Accreditation System (NMAS). Practitioner Membership alone does not include accreditation under NMAS. Practitioner Members have access to ADRA’s complaints handling mechanism and special events. There are two levels of our Practitioner Membership:
- NMAS Practitioner Member (those who have accreditation with NMAS).
- Non-NMAS Practitioner Member (those who do not have accreditation with NMAS).
- Organisational Members – ADRA’s Organisational Members come from a diversity of backgrounds. They include dispute resolution organisations, government departments, courts and tribunals. An initial four representatives receive Membership of ADRA, with additional representatives offered Membership upon request and the payment of an additional fee. Organisational Members have access to ADRA’s complaints handling mechanism.
- Non-practitioner Members – Non-practitioner members are committed to dispute resolution principles. These are usually retired members or those whom have previously been dispute resolvers and are keen to stay in contact with the ADRA community.
- Student Members – ADRA’s Student Members are full-time students who are interested in dispute resolution. ADRA’s Student Members are not receiving an income.
ADRA’s membership is annual. All members pay a full year subscription upon joining and will be invited to renew their membership near the anniversary of the date they joined ADRA.
Becoming a Nationally Accredited Member
ADRA’s Practitioner Members may apply to become Nationally Accredited Mediators if they meet the National Accreditation requirements. The requirements are expressed in the National Mediation Accreditation Standards, and are outlined in the Application Form for National Accreditation. National accreditation through ADRA incurs an additional fee of $100 for a 2 year period. ADRA Peer Support Program
ADRA offers a peer support program that includes our executive members making contact to introduce themselves to ADRA members. The aim of the call is to offer each of our members an opportunity to present their own work either via seminar or publication on our website, or anything else the members might like to offer. Continuing Professional Development (CPD) points are available for the amount of time spent on peer support. In addition, if an ADRA member organises a group of 3 or more people, we can supply a coordinator for group peer support at a suitable venue or via teleconference at a cost of $10 per person for ADRA members and $25 per person for non-members.
The role also includes general networking to ensure the needs of ADRA members are met. This is a very important initiative in this current climate given that our members now more than ever need to have a direct point of contact for any concerns they may have about their membership or about DR in general. ADRA’s aim is to offer a personal service to assist all its members through this changing DR landscape.
Professional Indemnity Insurance for ADRA Members
Members can obtain professional indemnity insurance from GIO. Premium for members of ADRA for a $1,000,000 limit is $250 plus GST and Stamp Duty. GIO has agreed to provide ADRA members with automatic run off cover if they retire during the policy period. To obtain this benefit of membership when arranging insurance:
- let GIO know you are an ADRA member, and
- you need to put mediator ADRA member in the employment section of their application.

Special Membership Levels
ADRA offers the following special membership levels that are awarded by way of Board nomination and approval to individuals to honour their contribution, achievements or service in the dispute resolution industry:
- Fellow. Fellowship is the highest title of honour awarded to individuals who have shown exceptional achievement on the Board in the development and objectives of ADRA, and service in the dispute resolution industry. Upon the Board, by motion, approving such nomination, the Fellow shall have all privileges accorded to ordinary membership of ADRA, except that the Fellow shall have no obligation to pay any annual subscription fee or any fee to attend ADRA events.
- Life Member. Life Membership is awarded to individuals who have made exceptional and outstanding contribution to the development and objectives of ADRA. Upon the Board, by motion, approving such nomination, the Life Member shall have all privileges accorded to ordinary membership of ADRA, except that the Life Member shall have no obligation to pay any annual subscription fee.
- Distinguished Member. Distinguished Members are individuals who have attained distinguished service on the Board. Upon the Board, by motion, approving such nomination, the Distinguished Member shall have all privileges accorded to ordinary membership of ADRA, except that the Distinguished Member shall have no obligation to pay any annual subscription fee.
- Affiliated Member. Affiliated Members are awarded to individuals for their recognition of the significance of dispute resolution to their own industry. Upon the Board, by motion, approving such nomination, the Affiliated Member shall have all privileges accorded to ordinary membership of ADRA, except that the Affiliated Member shall have no obligation to pay any annual subscription fee and has no right to vote at any general meeting or to hold office.
